About This Module
CEoL Module 3: Building Relationships shows team members how to use paraphrasing and empathy when responding to a resident or family member in difficult and/or emotionally charged conversations about end-of-life.
Team members will learn how to effectively paraphrase, how to incorporate empathy in their responses and recognize if a situation is outside the boundaries and limits of their professional role. Anticipated outcomes include improved communication skills to build therapeutic relationships with residents and family members and an enhanced understanding of the role that all LTC team members can play in end-of-life communication.
You will receive a CLRI certificate for completing this course.
It’s not easy or comfortable talking about end-of-life issues, but it’s important. Effective communication is crucial to understanding and meeting the needs of our residents and those who care about them.
The Communication at End-of-Life (CEoL) program provides LTC educators with tools for teaching palliative and end-of-life communication to team members, combining didactic, peer-to-peer, and scenario-based learning. All aspects of this program have previously only been available in person.
The eLearning version of CEoL allows all team members to dispel palliative care myths, learn how to recognize and accommodate the needs of those in mourning and to practice their end-of-life communication skills in three short, scenario-based modules:
CEoL is for all front-line LTC staff, including RNs, RPNs, NPs, PSWs, social workers, OT/PT, educators, dietitians, managers, spiritual care providers, care aides, volunteers, students, and anyone with an interest in communication at end-of-life.
These modules can:
- Help all LTC team members develop and practice skills in communication at end-of-life
- Serve as a refresher for those that have taken the in-person Ontario CLRI Communication at End-of-Life training
- Augment any palliative care training previously taken by LTC team members (modules focus exclusively on the psychosocial aspects of palliative and end-of-life care)
